Day 2: Jamie Adamson

Today was a busy day! After waking up quite early and getting some food down our necks we boarded the bus. After about 30 seconds we reached our first stop, a statue to commemorate the Vikings. A few photos later and a stop off at the arts museum we made our way to the Thingvellir National Park to see the tectonic plate activity where the land was literally tearing apart. The lake in the park had massive fish and crystal clear water which made it nearly irresistible for a swim until we found out that it was 2-3⁰C, the temptation quickly faded.

Soon after this we went caving through a lava tube. We pulled on our Kwik-Fit jumpsuits with a bit of a struggle and headed underground. Half way through the amazing cave system everyone took a seat and turned off our head torches to witness true darkness and silence! Then the troll stories started rolling out...

We soon visited the geysers to see masses of boiling water burst up into the air. There was no better feeling than thawing out our frozen hands in the water flowing out of the bubbling holes in the ground.

To finish the day off we trekked alongside a gorge. The path was one trip or slip away from a 90 metre shear drop into the gushing river of glacial melt water, pretty scary! The path came to an end at the extreme Gullfos waterfall. There were two levels to the waterfall, the first being 11 metres and the second 20 metres. The spray from the second drop was immense but as it got higher the mist froze leaving snow around sides of the fall. Definitely a memorable experience.

Roll on tomorrow!
