Day 3: Ross Gardiner

Our 3rd day in Iceland was a busy one. It started with a cold walk around a waterfall. Once we got into the bus and dried off, we travelled to a farm that was near Eyjafjallajökull. We then watched a short film about the eruption in 2010 and how the local people coped. It was very fascinating as a local farmer answered our questions and talked about their experience. After this we went to another waterfall, but this time we could walk up to the top. There were 416 steps which tired us out but it was well worth the view. We had a quick lunch and then went off to the glacier. Everyone was excited when our guide Dave fitted our crampons and gave us our ice axes. After a long walk up to the glacier we had a safety briefing and went hiking on the ice. We spent well over two hours adventuring around the glacier. The highlight for me was when we went into an ice cave. The walls were smooth as they had been created from a flow of water through the ice. We got down to the bottom of the mountain by sunset and got onto the bus. It was a slightly quieter trip home as everyone was tried from 8km of walking. We arrived at our accommodation at 8:30 and settled in for a relaxing evening and an early night.
