Hello and welcome to the Iceland blog that the pupils will be producing during their stay. As they experience a landscape that is probably unlike anything else they have seen before, you will be able to follow them as they post their thoughts and pictures of their adventures. Last year, in just five days, the blog received just under 5000 hits!
For the Geography department, this is our third trip to Iceland and with a little knowledge of what to expect, we cannot wait for the group to enjoy it.
Below is the itinerary as it stands and we look forward to seeing the group at school on Wednesday 22nd October, at 0800... with passports and EHICs.

Iceland Itinerary for Barnard Castle School
Wed 22 to Mon 27 Oct 2014
Day 1. Wed 22 Oct: “Arrival Day and Blue Lagoon”
•
Depart 13.25 Iceland Air flight Fl441 from Manchester arrive Keflavik 15.00•
Visit the Blue Lagoon (4pm) with its sauna and steam rooms•
Then to your accommodation at the Hotel Baron•
Evening meal at a local Restaurant – Pizza, burger, or whale steak
Day 2. Thurs 23 Oct: “Golden Circle and Going Underground”
•
Brief Tour of the city including views over the city centre from the Perlan and the Hallgrímskirkja•
Þingvellir National Park - rifting between American & Eurasian plates•
Caving in a lava tube (12pm)•
Gullfoss – awesome fault-guided waterfall and walk beside its gorge•
Overnight at Hotel Gullfoss
Day 3. Fri 24 Oct: “Waterfalls, Eruptions, Glacier and Coasts”
•
Seljandafoss (a 44m waterfall you can walk behind)•
Visit the Iceland Eruption Centre for effects of the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull volcanic eruption (11am)•
Skógarfoss (awesome 60 m+ waterfall)•
Sólheimajökull glacier (1pm)– walking on the glacier with activity company www.adrenalin.is•
Coastal Features at Dyrhólaey and Reynishverfi - including cave and arch development and spectacular basalt columns like a small-scale giant’s causeway (if conditions allow)•
On to Hotel Laki with meal at the hotel
Day 4 Sat 25 Oct: “Icebergs“
•
To the Ice Lagoon in the SE•
Brief stop at Skaftafell National Park Centre•
Search for the tundra vegetation and periglacialfeatures (polygons and stripes) on exposed surfaces•
Visit very impressive Svínafellsjökull glacier to viewmoraine, crevasses and pro glacial lake•
Jökulsárlón Ice lagoon – awe-inspiring colours of icebergs: walk round the lagoon towards the ice sheet.(Where the James Bond Film ‘Die Another Day’ was made) Visit the ice sculptures on the black beach sands if time.•
Boat trip amongst the icebergs on the melt-water lagoon•
Climb Europe’s largest lateral moraine to view pro-glacial lake and other features•
The sun then sets as come off glacier and its back toFarmhouse Drangshlid
Day 5Sun 26 Oct: “Geopark”
•
Into the new GeoPark in the Reykjanes•
See Explosion craters along the rifts – walk up to craters•
Hot mud pots and steam vents at Gunnuhver•
View an automated geo-thermal power station•
On to the Guest house Gardar and meal. See the oldest lighthouse in Iceland.
Day 6. Mon 27 Oct: “Departure Day”
•
Flight FI440 departs at 0800 hrs arrives Manchester at 10.35.
